“A woman is like a tea bag:
you can’t tell how strong she is
until you put her in hot water.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

Our Mission

We seek to involve women in the political process and to encourage and guide candidates as they focus on Democratic values in the State of Florida and across the United States.

We work to register voters among Democratic-oriented US citizens.

We are a grassroots network that is open, inclusive and accessible to everyone.

We provide education opportunities to our members and the public regarding important and critical local, state and national issues through speakers knowledgeable in these issue areas.

We support and coordinate with the Democratic Women’s Club of Florida in its policies and activities and actively support the formation of new clubs in North Central Florida.

Our Goal

The Democratic Women’s Club of Florida strives to build a bench of Florida Democratic Party leaders and elected officials. We strive to be positive, progressive and prepared to win elections.

The DWCF holds candidate training sessions for those considering running for office and those who want to help the campaigns. See dwcf.org/candidate –training.

The Alachua County Democratic Party has been a leader in candidate training and mentoring.

The Hon. Yvonne Hayes Hinson State Representative, District 21

Our History

The predecessor organization of the Democratic Women’s Club is the Women’s City Club of New York, founded in 1915 by a powerful group of women, including Eleanor Roosevelt. Mrs. Roosevelt was the First Lady of New York State at the time.

In its early years, the club focused on “the women’s right to vote, promoting access to birth control, and lobbying for female admission to established centers of learning.” From this beginning over 100 years ago, Democratic Women’s Clubs have organized across the country.

The Democratic Women’s Club of Florida formed on May 24, 1956, the day Eleanor Roosevelt chose as Democratic Women’s Day. There are over 50 affiliated clubs in Florida, all working to expand their membership and influence.
