Alachua County Commission meeting

Susan Bottcher and Shayna Rich have strongly encouraged those who can to attend the Alachua County Commission meeting on June 11th at 5 PM to advocate for At-Large District Voting to be put back on the ballot this fall.  The vote two years ago was to go to single member districts where only those in one district could vote for the commissioners.  Single member districts will favor one party over another where some voters numbered higher numbers in a party.  It is also much harder for the commissioners to get petitions signed as they must come only from within the district.  Please consider attending this important meeting.  Here is Susan’s message:

“This coming Tuesday, June 11th at 5 PM the BOCC will hold the final hearing on whether to put our ALD referendum on the ballot. This will be in the commission chambers, second floor of the county administration building. We need our supporters to be in the room and hope you can attend. The BOCC voted in favor of this last time (unanimously!) but we need to provide them the political cover by having more of our people there than the opposition. That’s right: we know Sen. Perry will be rallying his people to show up so we must outnumber them. You do not need to speak to the item if you don’t want to but it will be greatly appreciated if you do. Keep it simple: Please put this on the ballot so the voters can have a fair chance at hearing an honest debate from both sides…then LET THE VOTERS DECIDE.”
